Updated: 2023-05-07 --- # Broadcast Control Broadcast control is a type of message and control where the intent is to send a message to the entire frequency or multiple frequencies, and for all entities to listen to the message. The information provided must be in a format that all listeners can make use of. In broadcast control, the broadcasting entity states their callsign, and no specific recipient callsigns are stated. When doing AIC calls, the transmission simply begins with the sending units callsign e.g. “Closeout, single group…..” When doing non-AIC calls, the transmission begins with “99” then the sending units callsign e.g. “99, Closeout, SA-6……” BRAA format cannot be used with broadcast control, however Broadcast and bullseye are not synonymous, broadcast can incorporate GEOREF or coordinate based formats. # Tactical Control Tactical control is a type of message and control where the intent is to send a message to a single entity or flight. Unlike broadcast control, information can be presented in formats that are specific to the entity being spoken to. Any format can be used in tactical control, including BRAA, bullseye, GEOREF or coordinates. When using tactical control the receiving units callsign is used. When doing AIC calls, the senders callsign is omitted e.g. “Victory, single group BRAA….” When doing non-AIC calls, the senders callsign may be included if needed. E.g. “Victory, Closeout, SA-6 active…..” # When to use each Broadcast control is preferred as a default option because it reduces the number of radio transmissions and always presents information in a format usable to everyone, however there are some situations where tactical control is better. >[!example] > - Any kind of threat call where it is critical the receiving aircraft acts quickly. > - In response to queries by aircraft where it is of limited importance that other units understand. > - When there is any confusion about roles or tasking among flights, the controller should be directive and use a tactical control format to assign responsibilities and tasking. > - Any command or request to a specific aircraft, especially if it requires prompt compliance.
