Updated: 2024-08-30 --- # Changes to the Picture After a commit, the picture can change, sometimes very rapidly. There are several different methods to describe these changes. Outside meld range, the preferred methods for updates are descriptive updates for small changes, or a new picture call for major changes. Maneuver and relationship calls can be used, but if there is the potential for confusion, new picture is strongly preferred. Inside meld range, a new picture cannot be called, and maneuver and relationship calls must be used to describe the behavior of the groups. Descriptive updates are still used for small changes. # Descriptive Updates A descriptive update is how AIC communicates changes to groups. It can be used to update any information about a contact except for declaration. Descriptive updates should be used whenever the changes to the picture are small and can be easily described, changes in aspect, altitude, strength or TIPPER are communicated through descriptive updates. Descriptive updates can also be used in with or after a maneuver call in order to add clarifying information. When deciding whether to make a descriptive update, use good judgement if the information will be SA enhancing for the fighters. >[!example] Descriptive Updates >“`[AIC C/S]` `[group name]` `[changes]`” >>[!quote] >>- ==AIC==: “Closeout, east group track south” >>- ==AIC==: “Closeout, north trail group 35 thousand” >>- ==AIC==: “Closeout, north group, flanker” # New Picture [[APPENDIX A - ALSSA BREVITY LIST#NEW PICTURE|NEW PICTURE]] is used when outside of meld range and significant changes to the picture mean that it would be less confusing to simply wipe the slate clean and start over than to try to maintain group names for the rest of the intercept. In order to call a new picture, simply say “New Picture” then make a normal post commit picture call using the current situation, all old names and labels are disregarded and only the new names will be used. You can call new picture in conjunction with a maneuver or relationship call or by itself. >[!Example] 2 groups where lead and trail switched positions > ==AIC==: “Closeout, lead group, trail group, passing. New picture, two groups range 5 opening, lead group rock 087/24, 26 thousand, track east hostile flanker, trail group, 19 thousand, track west, hostile flanker” # Maneuver A Maneuver is called when a group changes at least 90 degrees in target aspect, e.g a change from hot to flank would not be a maneuver, but a change from hot to beam or drag would be. Maneuver can be thought of as a type of warning call, and it is desirable to make a maneuver call early even at the expense of identifying the type of maneuver. Before making a maneuver call, consider whether directive targeting should be added. There are three types of maneuver calls: - Maneuver - used for single group or when the type of maneuver is unknown - Maneuver Range - used for multiple groups or if a group splits when the maneuver will primarily affect the range element of the groups - Maneuver Azimuth - used for multiple groups or if a group splits when the maneuver will primarily affect the azimuth element of the groups >[!example]- Single Group Maneuver Example > ![[Pasted image 20230811223516.png]] > >[!quote] > >==AIC==: “Closeout, Single Group Maneuver” >[!example]- Maneuver Range Example >![[Pasted image 20230811223611.png]] >>[!quote] >>==AIC==: “Closeout, Lead Group Maneuver Range” >[!example]- Maneuver Azimuth Example >![[Pasted image 20230811223659.png]] >>[!quote] >>==AIC==: “Closeout, East group, West Group, Manuver Azimuth,” # Group Maneuver When the contacts in a group maneuver to the point that they exceed group criteria (i.e. 3 NM) a maneuver is called to identify the new elements. When this maneuver happens outside of meld range, it is best to simply specify the maneuver and then give a new picture with the new number of groups. When the maneuver happens inside meld range, the resulting elements are called “[[APPENDIX A - ALSSA BREVITY LIST#[direction] ARM|ARMS]]” if an arm maneuvers internally again the resulting elements are called [[APPENDIX A - ALSSA BREVITY LIST#CONTACT(S)|CONTACTS]]. When a group develops arms or contacts, AIC should call the aspect and altitude for all arms or contacts. Give directive targeting to arms or contacts individually if they are not already targeted >[!example]- Maneuver Range Outside of Meld Example > ![[Pasted image 20230811223917.png]] > >[!quote] > >==AIC==: “Closeout, single group maneuver range, new picture, two groups range 5 opening, lead group rock 240/45 22k track south hostile frogfoot, trail group 23k track north hostile frogfoot” >[!example]- Maneuver Azimuth Inside of Meld Example >![[Pasted image 20230811224005.png]] >>[!quote] >>==AIC==: “Closeout, single group maneuver azimuth, east arm 28 thousand track east, west arm 22 thousand track west” # Relationship Calls Relationship calls describe changes in the relative positions of different groups, such as a lead and trail group switching positions, or two groups joining into one. Outside of meld relationship calls can be used either alone or in conjunction with a new picture. Inside of meld relationship calls are simply another kind of descriptive update, they do not change group names or labels, they simply maintain SA on which groups are which. There are three types of relationship calls: - [[APPENDIX A - ALSSA BREVITY LIST#PASSING|PASSING]]- Change of positions in range - [[APPENDIX A - ALSSA BREVITY LIST#CROSSING|CROSSING]]- Change of positions in azimuth - [[APPENDIX A - ALSSA BREVITY LIST#JOINED|JOINED]]- two groups merging and remaining within group criteria >[!example]- Passing Outside of Meld Example >![[Pasted image 20230811224214.png]] >>[!quote] >>==AIC==: “Closeout, lead group, trail group passing, new picture, two groups range 5 opening, lead group rock 230/32 22k track south hostile foulline, trail group 23k track north hostile foulline” >[!example]- Crossing Inside of Meld Example >![[Pasted image 20230811224316.png]] >>[!quote] >>==AIC==: “Closeout, East Group, West Group, Crossing” >[!example]- Joined Outside of Meld Example >![[Pasted image 20230811224421.png]] >>[!quote] >>==AIC==: “Closeout, east group, west group joined, new picture, single group rock 230/32 22k track south hostile foulline,” >[!example]- Joined Inside of Meld Example >![[Pasted image 20230811224505.png]] >>[!quote] >>==AIC==: “Closeout, East Group, West Group, Joined” # Directive Targeting Directive targeting is when the AIC assigns targeting instructions to the friendly fighters. Directive targeting is used when the fighter’s targeting is unsound, or when the fighters have become untargeted and there are groups remaining. Directive targeting calls can be made independently or be appended to other calls, especially new picture or maneuver calls. When a fighter is given directive targeting, it is assumed they will support any missiles in the air for the appropriate time, then shift their targeting for any future shots. AIC should be proactive in issuing directive targeting for follow-on or threat groups, especially when fighters go to the merge or otherwise lose SA. # Declaration Change A change in declaration requires a full anchor call off of bullseye. >[!example]- Declaration Change > >[!quote] > >==AIC==: "Closeout, single group rock 240/50, 20 thousand, track west, HOSTILE, flanker."
